Michigan Music Conference 2020

There's truly something special when the stage brings all the music educators together as well-- and it's the Michigan Music Conference! It's a magical time when everyone gets together for special performances, professional development and, of course, the opportunity to catch up over a meal or a beverage while paths intersect for this annual event. Each year I attend, I find myself re-energized and excited to bring back the ideas I've discovered from the conference, and this year is certainly no exception! From inspirational journeys to energizing ideas and even a humorous story or two... Here are some of this year's highlights:

Definitely feeling Professionally Developed! The wheels are turning, the energy is palpable, and we've got to look forward to... time to get to work!

Innovator's Mindset in the Band Room: Student-Led Rehearsals

It all started when this happened... George Couros came to Rochester Community Schools yesterday, inspiring hundreds of teachers in his wake. If you are not familiar with George Couros (@gcouros), he is the author of the widely recognized, highly regarded educational manifesto entitled "The Innovator's Mindset" as well regularly writing on his blog, The Principle of Change . There are many aspects of the "Innovator's Mindset" that I find appealing. We agree on many, many points: the power of positive connections, cultivating passion, and the need for teachers to give students space and voice to take charge of their learning. This tweet though, sums it up for me: When you have a compelling reason, you can learn ANYTHING. #RCSInnovate — Kristine Balinski (@MathTeacherMrsB) November 5, 2018 If students have a compelling reason to connect, they will put in the work. Teachers are the resource, students direct their own learning. As educators, espec...

Student-Led Rehearsals: Student Feedback

So...what did students think of our Student-Led Rehearsals? Wind Ensemble (1st hour; Audition-Only Group) Generally speaking, Student-Led Rehearsals well-received in this ensemble. Many students expressed appreciation at building teamwork, and felt the topics they rehearsed "stuck" more quickly when they were able to direct their own learning. They also expressed a heightened accountability to self and one another, deeper engagement, and enjoyed giving/receiving constructive feedback to one another in respectful ways. Frustrations included lack of organization/unclear goals, time management concerns, starting/establishing procedures, and wanting more rehearsal time. Question: Where did you hear our efforts pay off? Question: Was there a difference between Student-Led and Director-Led Rehearsals? If so, what? Question: Was there anything challenging about Student-Led Rehearsals? Question: What are some of the ways we can improve rehearsals, no matter who is leadin...

Warm-Ups are FUNdamental

"Mrs. Stan, can I write a warm-up on the board today?" I can't believe my ears. Of all the questions I am asked, that is not one I would've predicted to hear on a regular basis. But we're a month into our school year and I get asked this question almost daily now. (Seriously.) Even the quiet student in the middle of the section has come up to me, told me they had an idea for a warm up, and asked if they could write it up on the board. (My heart about exploded when they came up to ask!) I'm floored in the best way possible.       We always start with the same question: What do you think we need to get better at? Whether it's for our concerts, for our ensemble, for you personally... What is important? After a few coaching sessions to reinforce the process for creating a circuit warm-up, more and more students have started asking to create their own.      Taking ownership of fundamentals. Aural and physical awareness growing. Some gr...
